![]() They collaborated and organised a group of investigators from the USA to conduct a clinical trial of aerosolised surfactant in Singapore. Wong Hong Boon, a Professor of Pediatrics in Singapore. Klaus moved to Cleveland to take a position as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University. A year later, these investigators published one of the first reports of the origin of natural surfactant from alveolar epithelial cells. Together with his mentors John Clements and Richard Havel, in 1961, Marshall Klaus published the seminal paper ‘Composition of surface-active material isolated from beef lung’ in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). During his fellowship, he focused on measuring pulmonary function in neonates and the composition of surfactant. He enrolled in a Pulmonary Medicine Fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) at The University of California in San Francisco (UCSF) and Oceanographic Institute in San Diego, which he completed in 1961. He became intrigued by the positive effects (more effective patient care and patient satisfaction) of opening a ward to parents so that they could stay with their children during their hospital stay.įollowing residency, he served in the US Air Force, followed by 2 years in a private practice in northern California, which convinced him that he would rather focus on a research career. At that time, visitation was restricted to 30 minutes per week on Saturday for fear of infection. He was also greatly influenced by Anna Freud who lectured on the topic of hospitalisation of children and visitation. Sam Spector and Charlie McKann, who were outstanding teachers and very skilled clinicians. During his residency and his year as Chief Resident, he was inspired by Drs. He then commenced an internship in Pediatrics at Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland and completed his training there in 1954. Marshall contracted polio during his third year at medical school leaving him with a flail right arm and weak right leg, but graduated in 1951 with election into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Society. Klaus believed his childhood experiences affected his career path significantly and were crucial to his development as a doctor. Following graduation from an inner city high school in Cleveland, he attended Western Reserve University (now Case Western Reserve University) where he completed his bachelor's degree followed by a medical degree. From early childhood, he wished to follow a medical career pathway akin to his father and uncle. When he was 6 years old, his father died of sepsis, and in his early teens, his mother died from breast cancer. Klaus, M.D., was born on June 6, 1927, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Max Henry Klaus, M.D., and the late Caroline Epstein Klaus. ![]()
